The Giucci Family

Nahyr Pantano

Nahyr Pantano Hernández was a Brazilian pianist who developed most of her artistic career in Uruguay. She was born on March 19, 1916, in Santa Vitoria do Palmar. She was the second wife of Carlos Giucci.

As a child, her family moved to Montevideo, where she began her piano studies. Thus, at the age of ten, she auditioned at the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music. Later, her family moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she continued her studies at the Instituto Nacional de Música. There, she took classes with Guilherme Halfeld Fontainha. During this period, she performed in several concerts. Years later, her family moved again, this time to Buenos Aires. There, Nahyr studied with the Polish master Jorge de Laléwicz, based on the recommendation of Camilo Giucci (son).

In 1933 she returned to Uruguay, and performed in several concerts, sponsored by the Asociación Coral de Montevideo. In 1935, she gave a concert at Auditorio del Sodre, in which she performed works by several international composers, receiving praise from critics. Among the audience attending this concert was Carlos Giucci. Together, they gave a concert in 1936. In the first two parts of the program, they played works by Vivaldi and Schumann, while in the third part they performed some compositions by Carlos. Nahyr and Carlos got married in 1937.

After the marriage, Nahyr continued to perform frequently in concerts, consolidating her reputation in the Uruguayan music scene. It is worth noting that Nahyr incorporated works by Carlos into her presentations. In addition, she frequently performed in concerts organized by institutions dedicated to artistic activities, such as the association “Amigos del Arte,” or the “Asociación Arte y Cultura Popular.”

In the latter institution, in 1944, she offered a concert of Brazilian music, after which the weekly newspaper Marcha stated that “The excellent references I had about this pianist were fully confirmed. The ease with which she handles technique is nothing short of astonishing.” On the other hand, in 1949 “Amigos del Arte” organized a conference and concert dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach, where Nahyr performed works by this composer, while Lauro Ayestarán gave a lecture on the subject.

She frequently offered concerts on the radio, which gave her recognition from the public. On the other hand, she performed as a soloist in the Orquesta Sinfónica Municipal de Montevideo (Montevideo Municipal Symphony Orchestra) and in the Orquesta del Sodre (Sodre Orchestra). Her last public performance was on November 28, 1979, at the Cathedral of Montevideo.

Nahyr passed away on July 15, 1981.
