Esther Giucci
Esther Giucci was a Uruguayan pianist and teacher. She was born in Montevideo on December 7, 1906. She was the seventh child of the marriage between Camilo Giucci and Luisa Gallo. In her childhood, she began her studies at the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music. She studied music theory with Manuel García de la Llera and harmony with Tomás Mugica. Later, she studied music history and choral conducting with Kurt Pahlen. In a letter addressed to Camilo (son), his mother Luisa said that “Estercita is very grown up, what she does on the piano is incredible, she has a very fine ear and an ease of fingers, she plays the C scale with both hands, some melodies… And everything by ear. She has a great talent that will impress you.”
She frequently performed as a piano accompanist. For example, in 1927 she accompanied her brother Carlos in a concert at Instituto Verdi in which they played works by Carlos on two pianos. In addition, she was the accompanist at numerous concerts and events at the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music. On the other hand, she performed many times as a soloist or accompanied by other musicians. Thus, in 1950, a conference and concert dedicated to Franz Liszt was organized at Sala Verdi. There, Esther and her sister Luisa performed works by said author. She also participated in many of the cultural and musical events that took place at the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music.
She was a member of the Anfión chamber orchestra, which was directed by the Uruguayan conductor Beatriz Tusset, who had been a student of Camilo Giucci (son). In this context, during the 1950s Esther performed in different concerts in Montevideo and the interior of the country.
She taught piano at the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music. She took over as the director of the Conservatory of Music in 1973, after her sister Luisa passed away. The following year, the Museo Histórico Nacional acquired part of the period furniture, as well as documentation and various objects that belonged to the Conservatory of Music, and added them to its collection. In 1995, Esther transferred the rights of the Conservatory of Music to Uruguayan pianist and teacher Julio César Huertas.
Esther passed away on February 26, 1999.
