About the museum

Presentation and objectives

The Giucci Museum is dedicated to the life and work of the musicians of the Giucci family, pioneers in music instruction and composition in Uruguay since the late 19th century—most notably since the founding of the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music in 1895. Thus, the Giucci Museum is dedicated to the life and work of Camilo Giucci (father), Luisa Gallo de Giucci, Camilo Giucci (son), Luisa Giucci, Mario Giucci, Carlos Giucci, Esther Giucci and Nahyr Pantano Hernández de Giucci. Additionally, it seeks to highlight the role played by the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music in music instruction in Uruguay, and in the dissemination of classical music.

This website presents the biographies of the above-mentioned members of the Giucci family. The biographies include links to materials and archival content about their life and work. In addition, a text summarizing the development of the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music, from its foundation in 1895 until the end of the 20th century, is published. Finally, the section entitled Documents comprises a large part of the materials collected during the research process. Users will be able to perform searches when filtering by publication date, by family member or by using keywords.

The aim is to make available to the interested public original materials collected during the research process, such as press, correspondence, archival documentation, recordings and scores. These materials provide information about the evolution of the members of the Giucci family in particular and, in general, about various aspects of Uruguayan musical and cultural history. Finally, the Giucci Museum seeks to contribute to the development of the history of music in Uruguay, as well as to contribute to the development of new research.

Project History

The original idea behind the creation of the Museum came from Ricardo Giucci, the grandson of Mario Giucci. Ricardo took piano lessons with Esther Giucci, who told him about her family history and the history of the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music, awakening his interest in these subjects. Since then, Ricardo began collecting information and materials about his family. In 2022, the idea of creating a virtual museum was born, with the aim of systematizing the collected information and presenting it to the public. From there, the brothers Ricardo and Guillermo Giucci began to take the first steps in this project; potential interviewees were identified, the building occupied by the Franz Liszt Conservatory of Music located at 1479 Treinta y Tres Street was visited, and the musician and researcher Federico Sardi was contacted, who carried out the tasks of documentary survey and systematization of sources and materials. During the survey process, public archives that house documentation related to the Giucci family were visited. In this regard, contacts were established with the Museo Histórico Nacional (National History Museum of Uruguay) and the Biblioteca Nacional (National Library of Uruguay). In 2024, Manuel Bóveda, a student of the Bachelor’s Degree in History, took on the tasks of document collection and text writing on behalf of the Museum. The first version of this website was published in March 2025.
